Holiday Product Photography feat. Everyday Household Items

Dec 06, 2022

It’s that time of year again to revisit last year’s Christmas bins to see what decorations to use for this year’s winter photoshoot sessions. But have you considered looking elsewhere? Perhaps your kitchen or bathroom? Below are 4 everyday items you might find laying around in your home that could be suitable for your holiday product photography needs.

1. Ice Cubes

If you have an ice cube machine or ice molds at home, consider using them for more than just for an iced drink! Without taking away from your product, ice cubes provide a subtle way of bringing your product to life, especially for products that are meant to be stored in a cooler environment. Shooting with ice cubes is a good alternative to shooting with clear quartz for example, and any ice cube shape would work depending on the aesthetic you’re aiming for. We used the Foldio3 to shoot this image but by using any of our products with adjustable

LED lighting systems such as the Foldio360 Smart Dome, Foldio2 Plus or Foldio3, you are able to adjust the brightness level of your images and make sure your ice cubes don’t get washed out in the light.

2. Cotton Balls

Next up, using cotton balls is a convenient yet creative way to resemble the soft look of snow or clouds. It adds to your image without being overbearing at all. Pairing glassware with cotton balls typically tends to photograph well together, as pictured below. If your glassware product is small enough, it could be a good idea to use the Foldio360 Smart Dome to limit reflections.

3. Kosher Salt or Bath Salts

If you have a container of kosher salt or bath salts you don’t see yourself using much, try using it as a decoration element for your photoshoot. Using kosher or bath salts are a good alternative to using fake snow or tiny white rocks. Pour some onto a flat surface or bowl while placing your product on top. Play around with different set ups and see what works best for you.

4. Any Boxes or Tissue Paper

After many gift exchanges, you probably have a pile of leftover boxes and/or tissue paper lying around. Re-using these for a photoshoot can be a good opportunity to present your products as a gift idea just in time for the holidays. Simply place your fluffed out tissue paper in a box and fill with your product. Or, use it as a background element to add some texture to your images. Feel free to add in any ribbon or crinkle shredded paper to fill up empty space.
